The historic centre around the cathedral and Calle Larios is the priciest and most touristy; the Soho district and Muelle Uno port are revamped for museums and restaurants; El Palo and Pedregalejo by the beach keep a fishing-village character, while Teatinos to the west is built up with modern housing for students and families.

A hub international airport, a metro, a cruise port, museums (Picasso, Pompidou, Thyssen) and a growing IT cluster make Málaga a real city with an urban economy, not a resort. La Malagueta and La Caleta beaches are within the city itself.
